The Irwin Creek History Project takes core samples from the natural and cultural history of Irwin Creek and the Third Ward Neighborhood in Charlotte, NC. Panels leading to the community center represent: microscopic creek life, a jurassic dinosaur that might once have walked the banks, the (also extinct) architecturally elegant African-American hospital 'The Good Samaritan,' a great blue heron, and examples of the Arts and Crafts cottages that follow the creek-- a creek that is itself partly extinct, channelized in the 1970's by the Army Corps of Engineers. |
